The session was an opportunity for local artists to get together and discuss what they want to happen during the three week festival. Particularly relevant for any newcomers but still worthwhile for regular participants. It was also be a great time for those people who will be opening their premises to help promote the event, to discuss what they need in the way of support to make the festival a great event. See also: Entry Forms for the 2008 Festival Entry Form - artists should use this form in conjunction with their chosen venue. If you are an artist who would like to exhibit but do not have a venue organised please contact the committee with your details, a brief description of your work and style and some images.
Artist Information - the following is designed to help artists plan, promote and install an exhibition, as well as tips on working with venues, selling and labelling works and other helpful information. This information kindly supplied by www.artsnorthernrivers.com.auExhibition Checklist 1. Exhibition type Solo or group exhibition? 2. Exhibition venue and dates Where is the exhibition being held? What are the opening and closing dates? (duration of the festival?) Is the artist required to mind the space at all during the exhibition? What is the timeline for dates such as installation and de- installation? 3. Selling artworks What percentage of a works sale price is payable to the venue/gallery? How much is the deposit upon the sale of an artwork? Will the purchaser be able to take the work before the end of the exhibition? How long after the sale of the work does the venue pay the artist? How will you be accepting payments. Cheque, credit card, bank deposit or cash? 4. Allocation of exhibition costs Will the venue publicise the exhibition as well? Will the work be insured? Who pays for the opening night costs? Is venue contributing? Exhibitions Planning the Layout Planning how to display your work within the venue you are exhibiting in is important. How you place your works in an exhibition space has an impact on how they are interpreted by visitors and can even impact on sales. Give yourself enough time to hang your works well. Think about spacing, the height of the works, number of works on a wall, how the works interact together, if they are 3-D is there enough space around them for people to view the works - these questions are best considered prior to installation. Ensure enough time to hang, coordinate this with the owner of the venue. Have all the material necessary to install the works. It is a good idea to provide some information about your work when it is on display to make it more accessible to answering any questions that people may have. This can be achieved by placing labels on the wall beside works, providing a price list for people to carry around and some biographical information such as a short CV and an artist’s statement.
